Kick-Ass Flash 3D export

May 30, 2004 · Posted in Games, Tech · 5 Comments

I found this while I was doing some research on Dungeon Siege II (Gas Powered Games). Click here and check out this wicked flash clip of the Morden-Viir Cavalry beastie running. To export this they used 3D Studio Max? Maya? Don’t know, but it looks great!

Rant

There is nothing that I hate more in the world than creating mock usability pages. It’s not fun, it’s not cool, it’s not even good to pass the time. I can’t reuse the code either because to create any code to be reusable, I’ll not be able to make deadline. So it’s limited HTML and image maps. Yippee.

Have a nice weekend. I’ll be coding.

btw…this is my 100th post. I Rule!

Well apparently I can breathe a sigh of relief. G4 has posted the shows that will be remaining on the merged network and it looks like all my shows are sticking around. Just hope that all the current hosts will also remain. I saw a preview commercial last night and it showed The Screensavers with the same people, so hopefully this will stay the same.
Here is the Show List

“Official” Doom 3 Requirements

May 24, 2004 · Posted in Tech · 2 Comments

It’s in quotes because I haven’t seen the box yet but Grendel Carmack told the press at E3 that the system requirements would be:

- A video card with at least 128MB RAM and Pixel Shader 1.1 support is required
- A 2.5GHz CPU should be enough for the stencil shadows and physics calculations

Also noteworthy:

- DOOM 3 will be released on 4 CDs
- Multiplayer will include Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Tournament and Last Man Standing
- Full Linux client support

I have enrolled in Modeling for Games with Maya at NYU starting in June. It’s part of a professional certificate program dealing with video gaming. I guess I’ll find out if I like it, huh?

I’m pretty psyched. I’ve been thinking about this program long and hard for a year or so, and doing a lot of research into the games industry and how/where/why I might fit in. Over the weekend I was doing a ton of air travel and was reading Dungeons and Dreamers: The Rise of Computer Game Culture From Geek to Chic by Kind and Borland (uh, ISBN 0072228881). I read the stories of guys like Gary Gygax, Richard Garriot, Carmack and Romero, Crowther and Woods (Zork!) and I realized that what they did and are still doing is valid within a social context. To put it another way…it’s been bothering me: is a career in video games kinda dumb?

I read an interesting theory about how technology drives our culture and growth as human beings…ie, dangle a problem in front of a scientist and you’re guaranteed to get some results, which breed new problems, which breed more and more, etc. I think gaming is still very much in it’s infancy and promises to offer a lot to the technical industry; entertainment initially, but the medical and educational sectors too. Hell, the first Quake engine helped push the boundaries of 3D design.

Way I figure it, if all these people out in Hollyood can get paid bags-o-money to look pretty while portraying some of my favorite Greek stories of all time and yet not know, in all likelihood, who Heinrich Schliemann or Richmond Lattimore were, I can mess around with some 3D models for a while and ponder the successes of the likes of Carmack and Romero.

Not to mention, blowin’ stuff up with rocket launchers rules.

This made me laugh… buncha slashdotters talking about Episode III and the supposed Surf Board Lava Fight between Anakin/Vader and Kenobi:

And at some point during that battle, there *will* be a “clever” visual gag that makes the lava-surfing look like real surfing, and at that point a major character will say “whoah!” like unto the manner of Keanu Reeves. Ad at that point, I will fling poo at the screen.

Mark my words, George Lucas! Poo!

Scratching for an Itch

I love my box.

My box rocks.

Yet, I can’t help but think about what kind of machine it would be if I stripped it down and installed Gentoo. Would it be fast? You bet your ass it would! It would definitely take advantage of the 64 bit processor. It would definitely get me back involved in “computers” and not just, “using an operating system”. Hell, I’m sure I have enough cycles to crank out VM Ware. I could install XP again and maybe even configure it correctly this time! Get Flash and Photoshop and all that going…

So what’s my problem? Why would I even hesitate? I like Windows well enough but I’m not a Windows devotee or anything. I still probably know more about Linux and the Mac than I do about XP… So what gives???

Half-Life 2.
Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault.
Um…

Could that be it? It’s only 2 games! There’s an excellent chance that the Linux versions of Doom 3 and Unreal (Quake 4 as well) will be just as good as their Windows cousins! So, I should say SCREW IT and DO IT!!!

But I won’t. For now, that is. I’m just scratching for an itch. I don’t know what it is but there’s apparantly some force that keeps me complacently numb. Trapped in this amusement park that’s everything I’ve ever wanted. A powerful, quick and insane workstation that allows me to play ANY game I want, and build ANY application I could ever dream of!!!

…but it’s not Linux.

Beta Testers Wanted

May 15, 2004 · Posted in *nix, Projects, Tech · 7 Comments

I installed Quake III on my RH Fedora box today, along with the missionpack (i.e. Team Arena) and I’m working on the install of Urban Terror and Railfest mods. Seems to be running like a champ and there’s SMP support built in, so I’m havin a good time. I need some beta testers. Please have the latest point release (1.32).

I don’t know how it happened but all of the sudden it seems that I understand my computers. (I have no idea. My skull is thick and nonabsorbent). Anyway, it sure is nice to be working with config files for something OTHER than ATG Dynamo or Apache, which I’ve been having a big struggle with — compiling and installing a Connection Module as a DSO in Apache 1.3, and running my ATG instance from it at work. It’s actually really cool once it’s working, as I now have my (er, Kaplan’s) Wintel P4 running the app server and my (er, Kaplan’s) Linux box running Apache. The two are talking to each other, having fun, etc. Jello for all!

So while I’m posting I might as well go off on the other stuff I’m messing around with. I’ve been checking out IntelliJ IDEA at work — we’re all going to be using it as the standardized IDE (we got a new CTO). It’s pretty kick ass (full UML support, wow! UML is COO!) I’m also looking into JEdit for my own use, as it’s mucho robusto and it edits just about everything under the sun, has plugins for ever, is open source and runs on everything. Paul, if you’re going to rock a little Java I’d really like to know if you’re using JEdit or something else, and what you think of it.

My Flash class at NYU got cancelled which sucks, and I wanted to get into my secondary class (Java I) but it got cancelled too…so I guess I’m rocking the books and my laptop over the summer. I know the chick up at the Atlas Cafe and so I’ll just have to go up there and learn a buncha crap over the summer. Conrad’s leaving, Paul’s leaving, guess I’ll just code for a while, save some money, and try to actually go kayaking later this year instead of talking about it until Thanksgiving when all the Orcas have gone home or to sleep or whatever they do. Killin’ seals. Takin’ names. Being badass predators. Right on.

And that’s a whole buncha tech crap. Time for a cigar and The Matrix. Peace…
