GNU utilities for Win32

September 29, 2004 · Posted in *nix · 7 Comments

This rocks:

1) Go to http://unxutils.sourceforge.net and pull the .zip down
2) Extract to your HD
3) Copy the binary path (e.g. C:/Unix/Utils/usr/local/wbin *) to your PATH environment variable on your Windows box
4) Enjoy full support of Unix commands from the Win command line! tail, ls, dir, etc

*uh, those should actually be backslashes but wordpress won’t allow me to insert them

Empire 101

September 28, 2004 · Posted in Games · 4 Comments

Well since Grendel said wtf is Empire I figured I would give a 101.
Back in the C64 BBS days when you logged in you had an option to play Empire.
Each day you would get X amount of moves (Think it was 3) but you could (A)ttack, (H)avest, (B)uild etc.
Basically a text version of Warcraft type games. But since you where only allowed those restricted moves once they where used up, you would have to wait until the next morning to get your moves back and then you also found out how you did overnite. Usually you would get a report back that I will allow Vott to explain in his detail since he usually doesn’t forget old school gaming details.
Anyways I actually found a telnet bbs that is running Empire however no one is ever online for me to get my account boosted up so I can play the damn thing. Hence the reason to create it from scratch with our own outcomes. You will see a gracious teaser I get when logging into the BBS.

Fall is for Gamin, baby…

September 26, 2004 · Posted in Games, Tech · 5 Comments

I got settled into the Fall gaming season today after finally figuring out how to share my 5.1 surround speakers between computers. I got a new XP box a few weeks ago specifically to run the new games, and although I’m still waiting for a replacement mem module (PC3500 DCMM) to make the hyperthreading work properly, I was able to get a fiber optic audio cable that I can use to share my 5.1 speakers with both of my Windows machines. Dude, I gotta say – all digital is mighty sweet. The box is grounded with an Abit IS-10 running a nVidia GeForceFX5700/256MB, 120MB SATA, 3.0 P4, and a gig of PC3500 Dual Channel.

So I do like they tell me, I turn the lights out and lock the door and turn the sound up. With my trusty new Nostromo SpeedPad n52 (muahahahaha), I’m having a lot of fun playing Doom III. I pulled the demo down on Friday and got instantly hooked. I also got my ass instantly kicked after entering this room. I shoulda known that when entering a room with heaving masses of pulsating entrails for, uh, walls…probably gonna be some bad mojo comin on. I’m diggin it.

September Sucks

September 22, 2004 · Posted in General · 8 Comments

Well this month has really started off to a great start.
1st I had my basement flood.
Monday I get into work all is normal, when around 9:00 am I get an email saying that there was some 5 fingered figure in here over the weekend that walked out with 2 of the companies laptops and a co-workers $80 in quarter rolls. The email addresses everyone to inventory our stuff to make sure that everything was in place.
So I started to look around, checking my cabinets, desk, finally opening my bottom right drawer to find that my Nomad Zen and my Skullcrusher Headphones where stolen as well.
According to the companies policy since this was my personal property they cannot cover my loses. So needless to say I am out $350 and have no motivation now to keep my work ethics up to par. So I am back to playing tunes on Winamp and bringing in music on cds again. Seem so 1990′s again.
So needless to say with the holidays creeping up fast I decided to create a Wish List at Amazon.com, so anyone wanting to pick me up something from my growing list…. Check it out!

And now, SB enters the political fray.

“House Speaker Dennis Hastert said al Qaeda wants Grendel Kerry to win the election.”

Well, that’s certainly a new one…

Scratching for an Itch (Part Duh)

September 16, 2004 · Posted in *nix, Games · 2 Comments

You may all remember my earlier rant where I feel I’m essentially using low-octane fuel (XP) in my Maserati (take a guess).

Well, it’s back. I’m sick of Windows. I really am. It’s been bothering me ever since I moved to Cleveland and installed the latest service smack (I mean, PACK). I thought that it might be the lack of internet connection. That would make sense, right? What the hell is a computer good for if it’s not hooked up to the interweb? So I waited, got my SBC Ultra DSL hooked up without a hitch (other than the wait) and I was up and running again. I was able to play games…

um…

OH YEAH! I was able to check email, read the news, post on snowbrain and yes of course, play games…

er something.

If you haven’t gone back to the earlier post I was referring to above (I don’t blame you) than you’ve probably discovered that the main reason I wanted to keep this machine as is was because of the games. Two in particular; Half Life 2 and MOH – Pacific Assault. Well, I’ve been watching so many movies on HL2 that I’m already bored with the game. I feel like I’ve already played it, mastered it and discarded it. Screw HL2. I’ve also downloaded the Pacific Assault demo and personally I think it sucks. I don’t know if they scerwed with the gameplay but it doesn’t seem as responsive as the original MOH… or maybe it’s me. So, screw MOH. I also have to admit that I’ve only gotten to level 2 (yeah 2) on Doom 3 and am bored with that. I keep visiting Fileplanet to see if there are any new demos on their way that I might want in on and I’m continually disappointed. So just when I thought I was getting fried on games I realized that I’m drooling over the purchases of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005(xbox), Madden 2005 (xbox) and Fable (xbox). See any pattern?

There are a few things I’ll miss about the XP:
1) Rise of Nations

Ok, so just one. I checked the Transgaming site and there seems to be no support at this time. Oh well, fsck me. It’s not a bad sacrifice, considering I plan to go back to school this spring. Too many distractions and all that.

So I guess during all this time I’ve still been scratching for an itch and it’s not going away until fdisk has it’s way with my hard drive. There are a few things that I need to do before I take the plunge (again) but I’m hoping to switch back to the light within the next month.

Oh and in case you were wondering…

Fedora.

Basement Jaxx This!

September 13, 2004 · Posted in General · 4 Comments

Well thanks to the lovely city of NT and their negligence I recieved a nice present ealier Thursday morning.
10″ of water in my basement. They knew we where going to get alot of rain and did not bring out their pumps until 6am thursday instead of sometime wednesday.
The houses on my street all do not have sump pumps since the area is dry. Since they could not control sewers they spewed into our houses. So needless to say I through out ALOT of stuff.
To top it all off, home owners does not cover this due to the fact that there was NO sump pump.
A big FU to the NT Public works.

Monitor death

September 12, 2004 · Posted in Projects, Tech · 3 Comments

12 noon today, messing with my new XP box. Getting ready for my very first Steelers game on NFL Ticket. And my 22″ monitor dies. Fzzt. Ain’t that grand? So now I have to send it to ViewSonic – good thing the warranty is still active. In the mean time I have to use my 17″ as the main monitor, which is lucky…I guess? I don’t know man…I definitely am not getting Doom III until I get the moose back.

And where the $%&*# is Vott? I ain’t postin’ again till he gets his ass online.

Synergy

September 11, 2004 · Posted in Tech · 2 Comments

Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems without special hardware. It’s intended for users with multiple computers on their desk since each system uses its own display.

In other words…if you have a laptop running Linux, a PC tower running XP, and a PowerBook running OSX all sitting on your desk, you can use one keyboard and one mouse for all of them WITHOUT CABLES OR A KVM. I saw this in use at the office yesterday and my jaw just about hit the floor. The mouse passes between the boxes without hiccups, lag, anything. It’s beautiful, especially if you’re working on a laptop.

Requires everybody to be on the LAN. And, of course, it’s open source.
