Burning Retina’s

October 27, 2004 · Posted in General · 10 Comments

Well after 8 years of owning my Viewsonic 19″ CRT the life expectancy has been steadily decreasing to the point now where after 2 hours of working on it, my eyes would be on fire from looking at it. After a tuesday morning chat with Grendel I decided that yesterday was the final day for my eye strains.
I read through all the reviews on which ones are the best etc… which I usually stand my ground on, but this time I ended up letting my eyes tell me which one was the best choice for me. So after gazing at probably 5 different models I ended up buying a SONY SDM-HS74P/B. My main decision beside the eye comfort was that this one had a DVI connection as well as the analog one. This ended up working great with my GeForce 3 Hercules card that has been sitting dorment in my gaming machine that I never use.

Spread the FireFox

October 21, 2004 · Posted in General · 3 Comments

Unless you have been under a rock for the past month you have probably seen a lot of media about Spreading FireFox. They have lauched a 1.0 Release date and are excepting donations. The minimum donation is $30 but the best part about it, is that your name will be published in the New York Times when the full page article is released. So if you wish to make your donation head on over to http://www.spreadfirefox.com/ .
They will send you a hi res PDF version of the article the day its published. But I think it would be just as good to have a real copy of the NYT.

Zen 2

Well since my last Zen decided to grow a pair of legs and walk away I have been hoping that some kind of insurance would cover this, which in fact nothing was. So luckily I was able to order myself a new one, this one is shackled down with belts and clips. Anyway my new updated model is very sleek and alot different. The touch controls are very cool once you get the hang of it.

My next item to get will be my SkullCrushers or something very similar. For now I resorted to a smaller pair of Paullips Noise Cancelling.

The debate again?

Was reading up on the beta releases of the next FreeBSD and stumbled across a guy who wrote up his beliefs on the bsd vs linux issues. Some obvious things we all may have known but a couple things that I also didn’t know.
All and all a good morning read while sipping some java .

Network, Part III

October 6, 2004 · Posted in Projects, Tech · 2 Comments

Well, it happened again. I tried to upgrade the firmware on my Linksys BEFSR81.V2 last night becuse my Vonage box is behind the router, and I’m dropping calls like three times last night, and I know that things are being kooky cause I’m trying to get TZO to work through the Motorola Phone Box through the damn router…and as I’m upgrading the firmware, the thing chocked on it’s own vomit. DOA. Dead router. So I get to looking at all this crap I have hooked up to it and my requirements: Vonage and the Motorola phone box, wireless router, need to have TZO happy with everyone, need to have several ports open…

Today I got a Linksys RT31P2. This little baby has Vonage built right in! And also TZO service built right in! And DHCP, QoS, you name it. It’s packed. And it’s at Staples with a $40 rebate. Can’t beat that with a hockey puck, now can ya.

Had to call Vonage to have them switch my Motorola MAC addy to the new Linksys one. Done. Needed a switch for more ports – and I happened to have this 24 port Linksys DSSX24 lying around (uh, this is the first network thingy that I’ve ever had that has it’s own cooling fan. Hee hee. Powerrrrrrrrr…) So I have enough ports to power the freakin neighborhood, or hold a LAN fest, or set up my own Data Haven or something. It’s a bunker party!

I thought you guys would get a kick out of the 24 port thing, anyway…LOL

Happy birthday Grendel. Hope you took the entire day off today!!
You should be sitting in a lounge car with your stogie of choice watching “The Price is Right” and all the other mid day shows.
Just glad you are still older than me…. ;)
