Ultra-Super-Mega-Massive-Online-Gaming

December 28, 2004 · Posted in Games · 2 Comments

I discovered Wish today as I was surfing FilePlanet (and looking for a demo of the new LOTR Game that just got released.)

Apparently the guys at Mutable Realms have created the first true MMORPG game (oops, I mean UMMORPG – that’s U for ULTRA) supporting over 10,000 players at a single time. Players are not divided by realm either…we can all meet up without having to coordinate that Rob is in the Realme Of Grutthamnia and I’m on Slytthe Isle while Paul is in the Domaine Of Fumm. (Dude, I totally love the Olde Tyme Englishe Spellying). This is impressive. I’d like to know what kinda hardware they are running.

Also, they apparently have a full-time staff of writers who are continually writing the storyline, so you’re guaranteed to see new things all the time. This is pretty cool. I signed up for the beta just to see what it’s gonna be like. If you guys are into it the linky to the beta is here – but know that it expires by January 1st.

I don’t expect to spend much time on it myself, with hectic work + classes in project management and Paulosophy coming up and all…but it sure looks interesting from a conceptual point of view. I gotta try it.

On to 2005!

Happy holidays, boys. Hope you both had a good one. I’m in NC and it’s all iced up this morning! I thought I was supposed to be in the south!

I’m setting up a file server for my Dad this morning using Core 3. While doing some research I stumbled across this link. Geez.

BitTorrent: it was nice while it lasted

December 20, 2004 · Posted in Tech · 1 Comment

I finally got a chance to mess around with BitTorrent this weekend and was able to peruse some interesting stuff. But it looks like the jig is up: sites I was leafing through yesterday are inaccessible or notices that they had to shut down are on the front pages, and articles at sites like The Register appear to confirm that the RIAA and the MPAA have stepped in to stop P2P servers.

I guess now we have to wait for the next UberGeek to come up with the next file sharing plan. I just don’t see file sharing going away, especially when it’s become such a staple of the tech-savvy community.

Well apparently I am the only one posting anything lately so here is another Hi to myself.. not to mention how hard it is to return emails as well. Its only at the most 2 clicks to check email now a days… unless I am back in stone age!!

Fedora Core 3

December 11, 2004 · Posted in *nix · 4 Comments

Well I have been using FC3 for about a week now and here is my break down thus far:
Also with the base install I am using CrossOffice which allows me to run Photoshop and Outlook (to get corporate email). Everything is working pretty well, Komodo runs like a champ, Thunderbird with Enigmail encryption will finally get the SB Boys into the 21st century. Another thing I recommend is to download and install is SHFS which allows you to mount an ssh connection! My only gripe would still be the fonts and how crappy they look on most web pages. I downloaded the webfonts rpm which includes verdana, arial and times new roman, this has helped but had to tell Firefox to only use my font and not the ones that are called by a site.
So all in all I really like it so far the only hardware problem I am having is that the cheap Dell computers they provide at work the USB chipsets are flaky seeing that I tend to lose my mouse about 10 times a day. So will be switching to a PS2 mouse to see if that fixes it for good.

The Journey Begins…

Alright boys. The time has come. This is the last post from my Windows boxen.
I may be down for a while but not out. Therefore, if you don’t hear from me for a while you’ll know why.

I’m pretty sure I have all my bases covered as far as migration and installation configurations are concerned but due to the fact that I’ve never tried running a Linux 64-bit system before, I’m certain that I’ll run into some problems.

Hello, Fedora.

I’ll see you all on the flip side!

VOIP router + Wireless Router + phone = stupid

December 5, 2004 · Posted in Tech · 8 Comments

Well boys, you probably know that I’m using Vonage as a Voice over IP provider. I’m also using the new Linksys RT31P2 which, among other things, includes two dedicated ports for Vonage, QoS capability, VPN passthrough, and also has TZO resolution built right in (no TZO daemon required!). It’s pretty neat. I’m running a Motorola 5.8Ghz phone so that my Linksys WAP54G Wireless Router and the phone don’t conflict with each other.

I’ve been having some problems lately with my phone service, where I can hear people but then my ability to transmit drops out for a time and then returns. It is highly annoying. I’m running a mixed mode network of 802.11b/g. 802.11b is half duplex, which means it can either send or receive, not both. And I’m not really “dropping” calls, I just lose the ability to transmit back to the user. Immediately, of course I want to blame Linksys, Vonage, Motorola, Earthlink, the Fruit of Islam, all reality television and Elton Grendel’s caterer. But hold on there, troops: since both the wireless router and the phone base station were only about 8″ away from each other (let’s say that again, EIGHT INCHES AWAY FROM EACH OTHER) I think that it’s likely I was getting some interference (regardless of the fact that the router is running 2.4Ghz and my phone is in the upper reaches). I hope that the fact that the damn phone is on the other side of the room will now solve my problems. If not I’m gettin a good old fashioned wired-up 50 pound office phone. Hell…come to think of it, that might be kinda cool anyway…

Bottom line: I want my brain chip and I want it now. All these external devices? Silly.

OS for Work

December 1, 2004 · Posted in *nix · 5 Comments

Well the news came down the pipeline today that I am now allowed to use any alternate Operationg System I want now for work. Since the corporate controls our windows machines on the virus definitions that are updated to the service pack updates etc… Well this week for some reason my Komodo and Firefox are randomly crashing which never used to happen. Makes you think MS included a crash bug for any non MS product in their latest service pack. If you can’t beat the competition shut’em down. Seems like their motto. Anyways I am going through my options I what I want to use (Fedora, FreeBSD, Debian…) majority here is pushing Fedora but who am I to follow trend. My only reason for swaying that way will be determined what Komodo will run off since they have a linux version.. Will keep you posted.
