Adobe to Aquire Macromedia?
I just found this out like 2 minutes ago. I’m concerned of the outcome. Combining these two comanies may destroy or increase the applications design/programming. How do you feel about this and what do you think will happen to the applications after things start rolling?
A) This is crazy and will destroy the company.
B) This will be awesome. Now with a larger R & D fund things may get better.
C) WTH are they trying to pull?
D) Does it really matter they both make crap.

Maybe not “awesome” but I believe some of the benefits will be that (designers especially) can have their cake and eat it too. For instance, I’m not a Freehand user but I’m sure there’s some functionality built in to that application that we’ll see in future versions of Illustrator. Another benefit may be that we’ll now see another player jump into the technology fray against Microsoft. Doubling not only R&D by also legal, and end-user muscle can’t help MS’s endeavors much.
When Macromedia bought Allaire there was always a lot of talk about how this is going to hurt the end-user but I don’t believe that’s what happened. Macromedia made Allaire’s products (most importantly, ColdFusion) better. Period. Some might argue (Rob, for instance) that it marked the end of a great IDE in Homesite. Well, Dreamweaver Pro still comes with Homesite for those that like the archaic. Hell if you want to go that far, use VI or even better yet, Ed.
On the flip side, with these two behemoth combining powers one might fear that innovation will start to s l o w d o w n.
With Microsoft’s presence however, this may not be the case.
I agree that this could be beneficial to everyone. Since these 2 companies have identical products already they would be able to merge the best of both worlds together. With Allaire being bought out in my opinion MM went after them to utilize Homesites coding engine as you now see in Dreamweaver today. I am still bitter that they REALLY do not support it or that the die hard fans that use it are the only ones posting in the support forums. I guess since I was asked specific questions from a Macromedia employee on my thoughts of improving Homesite with more PHP functionality I read into a little more than I should have. Since I DO NOT see them EVER doing anymore with Homesite!!
Since you mentioned PHP support for Homesite; I’ve been using Dreamweaver for my PHP project and am very pleased with the support so far. I’m sure it pales in comparison to (let’s say) Zend Studio but for straight-forward PHP coding, I’m impressed.
Its not bad at all on DW, I still use it when I do cutups and some minor programming modes at home.
Zend and Komodo pretty much have my marks on IDE for PHP though. Maybe with this buy out they will convert DW into an IDE too how the hell knows.
DWMX2004 rocks.
