Apple’s Safari passes Acid2 Test!

April 28, 2005 · Posted in Tech

Looks like Apple is concerned about Web Standards and are now providing something that meets requirements. I found this little article today.

It has been confirmed but is not out to the public yet. From what the links say, it is really just updates to the current version.
I wonder if any other commonly used web browsers will follow (IE, FireFox, Netscape, Konqueror, etc.)

What do you think?

A) Thats great! I hope more follow.
B) WTH is WASP?!?
C) Does it really matter if the browser is meeting standards I can still get hacked?
D) Safari is for Apple users and i don’t care what they do.

A, WASP is all good too, they are trying to enforce the Standards of the Web.
I really do not mind Safari, but since its only Mac based…. that blows.
Firefox since it runs on multiple OS’s should be the Web Standard once all compliances are completed.

    A.

I haven’t really been too interested in the web standards battle for a while now since I’ve stopped doing web development. However due to the fact that I am in fact working on yet another web application, I’ve found that said battle still ensues. Needless to say, I’m pumped that something like Acid 2 exists to raise the bar for web browser developers. Unfortunately, I don’t see IE7 passing the test. In fact, I’d go so far to say that it’s unrealistic that MS will ever participate. This of course may change if Firefox continues to nibble at their market share.

Off topic, one thing I’ve noticed while building this web app is that (for me at least) using CSS for layout and design is even more tedious and cumbersome to use than “advanced” table structures. Maybe I’m just lazy (and ignorant) but I’d rather lightly use CSS for color and style and then turn to embedded tables for layout. Makes more sense.

If anyone out there can argue otherwise, please fill me in.

    Definitely “B”…

WaSP Guys: “You browser makers had better comply to web standards or we will be FORCED TO BLOG ABOUT YOU!”

Apple: “Yeah dude! First POST, man!!! Cause we’re hip to what you designers need. Steve cares! And the uh…the compliance patch for Safari is here, uh…somewhere…jeez. Speaking of technology, have we told you how cool the new iPod iSchnitzel is? It’s battered and fried, and is a golden brown color. But no screen (Steve says they’re gauche).”

Microsoft: “Yeah, go ahead. We just sold 30 billion copies of Longhorn to the defense department and every oil company in the world. And our next browser has support for alpha channels in PNGs. And we’re buying Korea. Nice logo - we’re really scared. Truly.”

Mozilla: “We have actually invented a plugin that allows you to perform the Acid 2 test from within Firefox on all computers within your subnet and beams your results to Google’s new lunar golf course (oops…sorry guys).”

Netscape: “DAMN those guys at Mozilla…maybe I can still get a job over there. Damn them!”

Opera: “Our latest browser freaking talks, and STILL you guys don’t give us the time of day. Whatever.”

KDE: “How do you get ‘WaSP’? Shouldn’t it be, uh, ‘WeSP’? Ehh, no biggie…let’s get pizza and roll a doobie.”

I can understand your frustration with tableless designs. The amount of css hacks you must do to make things work consistantly in all browsers is ridiculous. If web standards becomes a reality then this maybe easier to deal with.
As far as the embedded table layouts, I have these pretty much streamlined as you can see on my volleyball site http://www.nfvb.com. Just view source paying attention to the header and footers. But you’ll need to peak at the css to see how that was done for the stripes.
