Chalk up a point for FreeBSD

May 16, 2005 · Posted in *nix

If you guys read /. which I know we all do, you may have seen the post titled “Microsoft to buy Red Hat?”
Here is the link to the full article.

Anyways, regardless of the outcome this is another notch in my belt for my determination to use FreeBSD since they are not going to sell out to Billy. Granted I see both reasons for this but in my opinion, anything touched by MS falls to the wayside, kinda like MM buying out Homesite… they make it sound really good, then boom… lets deprecate that product since we took all the good stuff we needed. So if this happens, I will remove Fedora from my work machine and install “The Devil”.

Well, fortunately however this does not mean that MS would be purchasing Linux. Just Red Hat. And frankly, if they want to buy a bloated, POS distro, that’s fine with me. There are PLENTY of other choices out there.

Now… who the hell’s been bouncing Sober worm-based German spam to my inbox!?!?!

Well…call me nutty, but it seems to me that neither Linux (name your distro, whatever) AND Windows are both missing the boat. If I had one OS to work with, I’d take Tiger, hands down. It runs Linux apps, talks to PCs, and is a helluva lot cooler than ANY other distro I’ve ever seen. Form a usability standpoint, it kicks ass. WinXP? Yay…it’s an Apple clone from waaaay back. Hell, Jobs and Gates used to hang out. And Phluxbox/BlackBox etc? I’ll spend four weeks configuring my desktop? Again, yay. Where’s the productivity right now. Why should I spend endless hours dicking around with my OS? I just want to send an email to China and check my marketshare, dammit.

Linux for the desktop ain’t gonna happen, boys. It’s too fragmented, too amature-clogged, too untrackable. It looks great on paper…but so does communism. It’s a capitalist world. I’ll put my bet on a hybrid, because to me that makes more business sense.

And before we go slagging Gates on YET ANOTHER uninformed knee-jerk gnu-revolutionary principled “evil empire” trip (tiresome), maybe you should read his speech from the 2005 World Health Assembly. Open your eyes. $28.8 billion towards global health.

I have absolutely no problems with my three boxen running Win2K and WinXP, respectively. I just don’t see the problem. I have absolutely nothing to whine about, because my shit works. And my bloated POS Linux box has been up for 9 months without a restart.

    Have a nice day. :)

If you can afford to purchase a machine that will run Tiger, go for it. You’re right, it does run Linux apps (not natively by the way, but if you know what you’re doing…). Remember that you can also run Linux apps on Windows with Cygwin installed. For me, using a mac is like getting my head stuck in the dessert display at Bubble’s One-Stop Candy Shop. No thanks. If I have to see any more brushed, chrome windows with gum drops stuck to them, I’m gonna puke. I like Fluxbox. As a window manager, I think it’s top-notch for a number of reasons. As far as configuration is concerned, with a clean install, I’m up and running in about 10 minutes.

I don’t think anyone should be waiting around for Linux to happen on the desktop. It’s happening now. It may not be devouring the market but it’s here and it’s not going away. _This_ is a good thing. The more the merrier. It pushes innovation. I’m with you on the evil empire shite as well. Darth Vader’s cool. Period. And he’s obviously giving a ton a money to the less business-savvy. What an angel. Improve health care, your image, and your taxes with one check. God bless America. (this makes me think of an article I read in Technology Review. Don’t blame me, you bought it for me ;))

I hate Windows but I love developing Windows applications. I love running Visual Studio and I love the .NET framework. I love Gnu and Linux. I especially love computers of all breeds and operating systems and I love thinking of myself giving 28.8 billion to kids who couldn’t afford pepto if they had the shits.

I still don’t love Red Hat however. I just don’t.

Got your message on Sunday. Much golf. Much love. Call you tomorrow.

    I’m tired. I’m salty. I’m out.

Well said! There’s nothing like a good computer debate. (And apparently I was a bit salty last night myself…it’s obvious that my logic is a bit shy of brick-house solid.)

Yes see what I started!! Debates… thats a characteristic of SB that I love.
What is funny is you guys avoided mentioning anything about Unix at all… you stubborn bastards LOL !!!

If little billy gates buys out RedHat then i will totally pass up learning Linux and just go straight to UNIX (FBSD). I’m forced to use Windows here at work. I’d rather use Mac OS X (UNIX CORE), but then again Hacking with Windows is not hard. ;) Gotta have fun with your co-workers. We shall see what the outcome is soon.
