This morning I grabbed my morning Coca-Cola and logged into me work machine. Popped open FireFox as normal which loaded my homepage ( /.) I see this article.

I really like the fact that even Hackers are getting tired of these stupid sites. My guess is because they are not getting a slice of the action gives them more reason to just kill the site. If only this was a legal way to destroy those types of Fraud Sites. The government should really consider hiring a hacker team to only go after those types of sites. It would shut down many of those sites and I’m sure it would be fun in the process.

What do you guys think?

“I can see where these hackers or vigilantes are technically astute and their frustration is high,” Larson said. “But as professionals in this industry, we wouldn’t recommend they do it (hacking).”

Thanks for that enlightening comment Susan…now, what ARE you recommending?

Peter Cassidy, secretary general of Anti-Phishing Working Group, an industry alliance, acknowledged there was a “gap” in law enforcement action against the schemes, but that hacking was not the solution.

Gee! Thanks Pete…and what are YOU recommending?

“Are the ends good? Undoubtedly. Are the means justified? I don’t know,” said Cory Altheide of the SANS Internet Storm Center, a consortium of academic and industry security experts.

    Hmm. At least he’s honest…

Seems like these so-called professional security people don’t have a fucking clue about how to react to Phishing. In counter-terrorist operations, the best way to fight is to adapt the techniques of the enemy, improve upon them with superior funding and intelligence gathering, and use these tactics against the competition. I think these people are full of beans.

Note to the “industry security specialists”: it’s called cracking, people. Not hacking. Quit using the pejorative. Jesus.

cracker: n. One who breaks security on a system. Coined ca. 1985 by hackers in defense against journalistic misuse of hacker (q.v., sense8). An earlier attempt to establish `worm’ in this sense around 1981-82 on Usenet was largely a failure.

So True, Grendel. I really wish they would use the correct terms also. Most of the “Hacking” these days are not actually hacking. Its cracking. Seems to never be used correctly in security type reviews unless it was written by a Hacker/Cracker.

Thanks for your input. I too noticed that even though they are bashing this technique and trying to make it wrong, they still do not give a means of corrective action. Makes you think if its not because they may be a part in the Phishing.

Great link theDarkStranger and well played, Grendel. I couldn’t have responded better myself.

    What ARE they recommending???

Of course they _have_ to say that until they go home and tell their spouse how kick-ass it is that a bunch of geeks are doing their jobs for them.

I say, “HELL YEAH!!! Keep it up!”

  4. Paul says:

Grendel, I’d also like to thank you for using “pejorative” in a sentence. ;)

    LOL boys…let freedom ring!
