In some circumstances, as with Patriot Act requests, Google would not even be required to notify the user that their files were being turned over. Because of the secrecy of such investigations, it’s impossible to know how many such subpoenas have actually been issued. However, says Bankston, “It’s fair to assume that Google — and all the other search engines — have received and complied with this kind of request in the past.”

“This is every text document on your computer that you’ve set Google to index,” says Bankston. “Unless you’ve individually marked all of your private files [not to be indexed], you are going to be putting your most private data on Google’s servers.”

Let me just say two things…

    1) Google Desktop scared me during it’s beta phase.

    2) Anyone who didn’t see this coming should have their head indexed.

    1) Never installed!
    2) Head is indexed.. multiple times
    3) Google is turning into a MONOPOLY

Sure glad I joined the Snowbrain community. I had installed and used Google desktop for about a month, if that. But because of performance issues, I stopped using it. I just deleted it from my computer today. Now, I don’t know how much of a threat it is to me personally….but. Privacy IS privacy, and I ain’t gonna let myself get pimped anymore that I have too.

Glad I never installed it. I had a feeling that if an Internet Application was able to help me search for files on my machine sit would have to index all files available. Now with the application indexing all my files that would mean that the company behind the making of the search tool would have this information at any moment.

Never will I install an application to help me search on my machine. If I can’t remember where it is then Oh Well!

Good point theDarkStranger…But now that I deleted this program…will they have a glimpse of my files. I never did a search on my pc while I had the program installed or running. I agree, if I can’t find it, than sucks for me….
