Ah back in the C64 days we used to buy these RUN magazines that had programs you would type in which built an actual application of some kind good or bad. Now a days the focus is finally getting into high school students grades 10 – 12 to actually build stuff for the Open Source community. A Dutch high school started CodeYard which allows students to choose a project they want to participate in. This is a great way to learn programming and a good way to help build on the Open Source community. I wish something like this existed when I was in high school.

Eh, these kids have it easy. Back in my day you had to type code in on the ol Atari 800 for a whole day using a magazine that you somehow borrowed from a friend of a friend who had an uncle who had a contact who lent him the magazine…only to end up after 1200 lines of code were written to find that you had a box with Hello! in the middle that changed color – once.
